The G91DAB will begin shipping during Q1 2005, with the G01DAB and G51DAB available shortly after. Users of Meridian’s DAB products enjoy all these benefits while in addition, DAB reception capability is completely and seamlessly integrated into the system to produce the best-sounding DAB equipment available. They also like the freedom from background noise and the fact that the display will tell them more about the station, program or music being played. Listeners like DAB because it is very easy to use: instead of remembering the frequency, the listener can simply turn a knob to scroll through the names of the available stations, and press a button to choose one to listen to.
As well as music and speech, DAB stations can additionally carry data that can be displayed by the receiver while listening to the station. It also allows broadcasters to transmit more stations in the same bandwidth as one FM station. The system, which uses a compressed digital streaming format based on MPEG, is extremely popular in Canada and throughout Western Europe, with Britain and Germany leading the way. It is currently available to over 300 million people in almost 40 countries, with over 600 different services, and these numbers are increasing daily. The first model available will be the G91DAB DVD-Audio/video player/controller system, followed by the G51DAB receiver and G01DAB controller (Meridian’s term for a preamplifier).ĭAB Digital Radio is extremely popular all round the world outside the USA.

International CES, Las Vegas, NV, January 6, 2005–British high-end audio/video manufacturer Meridian Audio, of Huntingdon, near Cambridge, UK, has announced a new variant of three of its popular award-winning G Series products to include DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) tuners as well as conventional FM reception. If you’re looking for something to add an FM source with, or wanting to complete your Meridan 100-series set, it’s ideal and they’re very good value at under £100, considering the beautiful build quality and top-notch engineering.G01, G51 and G91 variants newly available with DAB/FM tuners It has a slightly warm but very smooth and subtle sound, with good noise performance and a clean, sweet treble. This is a very sweet, even and open sounding tuner, with surprisingly good sensitivity for a tuner of its age – none of which were famous for working with low level signals. Round the back, a DIN socket gives audio out and a 75 ohm aerial jack pulls the signal in. A neat backlit meter assists with this, and there are toggle controls that work slickly to switch the muting and/or mono mode on or off. An FM-only design, it sports six presets, which are set-able via tiny screw adjusters once this is done, the main rotary control lets the user toggle through the presets or tune manually. Meridian’s 104 tuner is an example of the former, but deserves to be the latter!ĭesigned as a visual match to the company’s beautiful 100-series, originally launched in 1978, it has Allen Boothroyd to thank for its lovely packaging and ergonomics, and Bob Stuart to congratulate for its superb sound. It’s amazing how some classic products have disappeared into the mists of time, totally forgotten – while others are talked about many decades after their demise.
